The Council of the European Union and the European Parliament reached an agreement on the recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

By putting the EPBD recast on top of their agenda, European legislators have acknowledged the urging need to support energy efficiency and renewables uptake in both residential and non-residential buildings.

The main objectives of the revision are that:

✔ by 2030 all new buildings should be zero-emission buildings

✔ by 2050 existing building stock should be transformed into zero-emission buildings.

The provisional political agreement on the EPBD recast has not been made public yet, but we hope to see some in the final text:

• support to energy management solutions to guarantee actual performance over time

• a definition of zero emission buildings (ZEB) covering buildings supplied with energy from efficient district heating and cooling systems
