Until 8 July 2025, the European Commission held a public consultation on the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS I), aiming to evaluate its performance, assess whether its full potential is being leveraged to meet the EU’s decarbonisation objectives, and identify areas for improvement.
EFIEES believes that the EU ETS I remains an effective tool to cut greenhouse gas emissions, with the Market Stability Reserve (MSR) significantly enhancing its functioning.
However, EFIEES identifies some areas of improvement and simplification, notably related to the administrative burden, as well as audit and verification processes. As we highlight in our position paper, any proposed changes are supported by a thorough impact assessment to ensure that the integrity and effectiveness of the system are not compromised.
