 EFIEES' definition of Energy Performance Contracting

 Definition in the Directive 2006/32/EC on energy end-use efficiency and energy services:

"a contractual arrangement between the beneficiary and the provider (normally an ESCO) of an energy efficiency improvement measure, where investments in that measure are paid for in relation to a contractually agreed level of energy efficiency improvement"

 Definition in the Commission's Energy Efficiency Plan 2011:

"Under this performance-based form of purchasing, monetary savings from lower utility bills and maintenance costs that result from energy efficiency measures are used to cover part or all of the measures' investment costs."
